Today's success tip comes from Amanda Gore.
Now based in the US, Amanda has spoken in every business sector and has keynoted at the Million Dollar Round Table and the National Speakers Association. She is also the author of three books and many DVD learning systems.
How do you effectively get your message across when speaking to a large audience?
By paying attention to both the content and the process. Content is the actual words that I say, process is everything else that happens when I deliver my message. It is the process by which you get your message across that determines the success and long-term impact of your speaking.
My process starts even before the audience walks into the room. I have burned a CD of music that is upbeat and makes people want to dance, and I play this while people are walking in. As they enter, I will often herd them into the front seats, as empty seats anywhere can spoil the connection. This process also helps them to connect with me, as they do not yet know I am a speaker.
I always ask for theatre-style seating because it helps people connect better, and full house lights as I don't want anyone hiding out in the dark. If it's not too stressful for the planner, I also ask to have empty seats taken out of the room. Or better still, I mention it beforehand so that they can set up the correct number initially. So you can see how much detail goes into process and this is just some of what I pay attention to before I speak!
And when it's time to speak be sure to:
- Use humour. If you are not entertaining to some degree you will lose them after five minutes.
- Know your content really well so you can focus on the audience.
- Use your face, body, voice and location to create images for them on the stage.
- Use personal stories and always acknowledge other people if you use their story, poem or quote.
- Vary the pace and be dynamic. Do not read!
- Have the audience interact with each other every couple of minutes or laugh or do something that is different from just listening.
- Rather than using PowerPoint or other visuals, be the visual! Create characters, act them out and have them get messages across.
- I use flip charts but they are just for the process, not really to deliver a strong message. My messages are delivered in the interaction between audience members.
- Use examples that the audience can relate to from everyday life. If they relate to what you are saying, the message will have more impact.
- Build rapport with them in whatever way you need to.
- Be authentic, honest, sincere, and really care for them and come from your heart; do all of this with great love and respect.
